Tyler Young and the Bullet Racing team arrived at Iowa Speedway on a warm, sunny Friday morning to test at the track Rusty Wallace built in the Midwestern town of Newton. Friday had been set aside for an open test; giving the drivers and teams a chance to get acquainted with the track. While the track is the second stop for the series in the Championship, it is the only stop there during the season, not being a track that is on either the Northern or Southern divisions regular season schedule.
The #11N Randco Industries Chevrolet rolled out on the track in the morning and Tyler was learning the track and finding lines that were working for him and his car. "I can not thank Chad Sims, my spotter, enough, Tyler said. "He was coaching me on corner entries and different lines I should try; all enabling me to get more comfortable with the track and getting better times."
"Unfortunately, the engine we had in the car just was not giving us enough power on the long front and back stretch, so Bill Harkins and the team decided to make an engine change." "The Bullet crew worked past closing hours at the track to make the change and I can't thank them enough for the extra effort they are always making on my behalf," an appreciative Tyler stated.
Saturday saw more practice with 32 other drivers. The race started in the early evening with Tyler sitting on the grid in the 28th starting position. After a slow start, Tyler was able to advance the #11N car a few positions before his first pit stop. "I missed a shift at the start of the race and that put us behind a little, and it took me some time to get back up to speed, but felt we had a good car to advance through out the night," Tyler said. "The track has a lot of grip and I know there were some drivers having tire issues, but the set up on my car did not seem to be having a negative effect on our tires in practice or in the race either," he continued.
Unfortunately, on lap 62 we had a mechanical failure and ended our night early. Tyler was very grateful for the hard work his crew and family put forth during the two days; "I just hated it for everyone, they all came a long way, worked hard for two days and for the night to end like it did, I really felt bad." "We'll just have to get back at it at the next event," he concluded.
The impression of seeing Iowa Speedway for the first time is always one of awe. It was no different for Tyler Young and new crew members of Bullet Racing. "It was an incredible facility, the track was gorgeous," Tyler stated. "Having the garages to work out of, I have never raced anywhere like that before," he continued. His thoughts of the track were shared by others seeing the facility for the first time; and even for those returning to the track for the third season the Pro Cup series had visited there. The asphalt gem in Newton, Iowa was holding its last event of the 2008 season and it was evident that the track is well supported; a reported attendance of over 16,000 was on hand to watch the Alan Kulwicki Memorial Race2Recovery 225 on Saturday, in addition to the Pro Cup race, fans were also treated to a SCCA race on the road course, a concert by Phil Vassar and a fireworks display. For Tyler and the Bullet team, it was an honor to be a part of the competition.
The next event on the schedule will be the third Championship race, The Dan Duncan Aaron's 250, at Southern National in Kenly, NC on October 18th. The race at Iowa can be seen on the Versus Channel on Monday, September 29th at 4:00pm (ET)
