Bristol, Tenn. If only the race had been only 55 laps long.
Derrick Kelley had a solid Top Five run going by Lap 56 in Wednesday's Aaron's 150, but mechanical problems abruptly ended his progress at Bristol Motor Speedway.
He finished 28th in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series' regular season finale, which was 14th among Sears Auto Center Northern Division competitors in the event featuring the best qualifying cars from both Pro Cup divisions.
Kelley started the No. 21 NGA Hooters Pro Golf Tour Ford Fusion 34th, but he moved up as high as third as wrecks marred the first few laps. He was still running near the front when he noticed difficulties with his car.
"We were running the exact same times as the leaders, sometimes better," said crew chief Darrin Shaw.
Kelley was obviously disappointed, but he tried to look at the bright side as there's still plenty of Hooters Pro Cup racing left in 2008.
"It's frustrating, but at least this didn't happen in the championship," said the Comeback Motorsports driver.
He ends the regular season 10th in points in the Northern Division. The first of the Pro Cup's four Championship Series races will be on Aug. 30 at Mansfield Motorsports Park.
About Comeback Motorsports
The name of the Comeback Motorsports team carries a lot of meaning for driver Derrick Kelley and team owner Tim Gainey. For Kelley, "comeback" is about rejuvenating a USAR Hooters Pro Cup career that's seen him collect three wins, 27 Top Five finishes and 46 Top 10s in only 114 starts. For Gainey, though, the word is even more significant. He was seriously injured in an industrial accident, which has made him a tireless supporter of making racing accessible to everyone.
