Mikey Kile and Team Leaves Iowa Still in the Hunt for the Rookie of the Year Title
Mikey Kile and the Vis Viva energy drink team had a tough two days at the two year old track, Iowa Speedway this past weekend. There was a mandatory practice on Friday where Kile fought the car with turning issues all day. The team made adjustments after adjustments and ended up leaving Friday with a grim look for Saturday's event. Pit gates opened early Saturday morning as the team prepared for the am practice session followed by qualifying.
Saturday's practice session ended up turning the team around with a positive outlook. This was Kile's first trip to the 7/8th mile speedway, designed by NASCAR Veteran, Rusty Wallace. Kile stated, "I loved the track, it's great, fast and fun! We struggled with the car all day Friday, but Tony Lambert (crew chief) made a few adjustments and the car really adapted to the changes. We were going to be really fast for the race."
Qualifying was schedule for 3:30 Saturday afternoon and the Vis Viva energy drink team took to the grid, but failed to make the two lap qualifying attempt. Kile dropped a valve during the five lap scuff session. After pulling out the backup car to change engines, the team had to take the penalty and start from the rear.
Emotions ran high for the Northern Rookie of the Year, knowing that he had a long afternoon ahead of him. Green flag dropped at the beautiful Iowa Speedway around 7:15pm. Kile knew that he had to race hard right off the bat. By lap 17 Kile was up to 18th position and began to chat over the radio discussing their pit sequence. Starting in the rear seemed to shake up things for their pit strategy. Kile and team made rounds of pit stops in the first half of the race and began to move his way up through the field. Kile stated, "The car is really fast, we have a car to beat, I'm happy with it and it's working all the way around."
Kile moved up to 2nd place where he stayed for a while, laying down consistent lap times. Cautions dropped several times as he maintained the 2nd place position and began to slip back a few spots. With 14 laps to go, Kile was in 6th place and restarted behind the #75 car of Bristol winner, Caleb Holman. Holman missed a gear on the restart causing Kile to ram in the back of him causing a chain reaction behind Kile. This shoved Kile up as he bounced off of the wall and car team suffered truck arm and rear-end damage. He continued to lose positions and ended up finishing 20th. This finish did not affect the team much in the Rookie of the Year standings where he is only 28 points behind leader, Hunter Robbins.
Look for Kile and the Vis Viva energy drink team at Southern National Speedway, Kenly, NC on October, 18th.
